More about Jim
Jim Harley has a varied history. To briefly summarize: born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. As a child through his loving parents, he traveled, has fun at the ocean and enjoy many hobbies including a "ham" radio operator and special FCC licenses.
After graduating from
Savannah High school, he matriculated in (what is now)
Armstrong Atlantic State University. In 1964, Jim
transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Jim became
employed by Georgia Tech in the Engineering Experiment Station's
Principle Research Technician supporting the Institute's large computer
systems. Offered a job in Detroit, Jim first obtained a
B.S. degree in Mathematics.
After graduation, Jim as employed by a major computer manufacturer supporting large scale systems in their International Group. Jim was involved in very many varied accounts such as Sao Paulo Stock Exchange, setting up a computer company in India, supporting banks from Europe to Japan, marketed systems in South Africa, supporting universities from Mexico to Austria, and optimizing weather bureau systems for the Netherlands.
Nearly 10 years later, Jim joined a consulting firm managing development projects mostly in Michigan. Subsequently joined another firm to manage the international Training and Consulting division.
In 1986 Jim started his own company providing raining consulting, projects and programming services worldwide. This consulting, programming and education was the primary of several companies Jim owned. During this phase, Jim lived in the Netherlands and Belgium for four years managing a large computer project. During this era, Jim's consultancy included performance analysis and computer system recommendations to virtually every agency in the State of Michigan
In early 1990s. Jim relocated to northern Michigan starting new ventures. Ventures included working and teaching for North Central Michigan College, training and consulting in the computer industry.
On the personal side, Jim had a sailboat sailing the Great Lakes, sailing to Cuba (photo above) and solo sailing the Atlantic Ocean .
Also during this period, Jim enrolled in an Institute to study among other things, history, consultation, philosophy, Judaic historic cultures as current cultures. Jim had no intention to be a cleric but only gain more education. However, graduating after 3½ years of study, a friend asked him to perform a family wedding ceremony. Jim said yes. That celebration started the clerical ball rolling.
After a tragic, near-death event in March, 2000, resulting in permanent disabilities, Jim, the outdoors man, the skier, the traveler, and more, shut down his computer business and terminated most functions. Nevertheless, after a year, he subsequently resumed some different clerical activities.
Jim's various leisure activities include:
Skiing
(US Sierras, US Rockies, Canada, Switzerland, France),
Racquet sports
(esp. Tennis),
Mountain
(rock climbing peaks including 14,000'+ [4270 m],)
Sailing
(Great Lakes & Oceans), and
more. And of course, travel.
Jim Harley believes in the consistency of words we say and our behavior. He believes in a philosophy affirming that the power of individuals to achieve a meaningful and ethical life lies within themselves and other people. The world is a natural place, governed by natural laws; human destiny is in human hands.
